Welcome to the Game 2.0
Welcome to the Game 2.0 is a puzzle style horror game and was released on April 3, 2018. The characters in this game are unrelated to the first but some of the game mechanics are the same. Such as the main game mechanic which is search on the deep web to find codes that you need to get to your goal which is to get into the Shadow Web.
You play as Clint Edwards who is a detective investigating the disappearance of a woman named Amelea. In the beginning of the game you see a livestream of her saying she is being chased by people in masks which Clint concludes is most likely a cult group called Noir. In the game Clint has to from 10PM to 4AM which gives the player 3 hours in real world time to find all of the codes.
In the game you have to defend yourself against five major threats that will result in a game over. The are a hired hitman, the police, cultists from Noir, a serial killer called the Breather, and a secret killer known as the Doll Maker. They each have a different way of being dealt with and avoided which Adam gives you in the form of documents.
The easiest to deal with are the police which you can avoid if you hack into your neighbors’ Wi-Fi and jump between them to stop them from tracing it to you. There are two stores that allow you to buy things that help you throughtout the game like software to hack safer Wi-Fi accounts, security supplies, and VPNs that earn you DOScoin (the form of money in the game). However the things you buy other then the software require you to go outside to get them in the alleyway which is where the Breather is. This also makes it easy to avoid him if you don’t really buy anything.
There are two other major game mechanics which are that you are constantly getting hacked and the power turns off at random times which makes the player nearly blind unless they have a flashlight. The game auto saves every 15 minutes however if you get a Game Over it starts over at the title screen deleting any save data forcing you to start a new game. Which is one of the reasons the game has been called absurdly hard to play and the developer himself is disappointed in the endings considering how much work and time you have to put in to get them.
Life is Strange: A choice based Indie Game
Life is Strange is a graphic adventure game that is split up into five episodes. The episodes were released throughout 2015 and developed by Dontnod Entertainment. The story is told in a third person view and you play as the main character Maxine Caulfield also known as Max. In the game she discovers she has the power to rewind time which is the main mechanic you use throughout the game.
This is useful in the game because it not only allows you to go back and change a choice if you did not like it but go back in conversations and some of the dialog options will change based on information you learned before you rewound. This also applies to any object you get before you rewind time it will remain with you.
The game is set in the fictional town of Arcadia Bay, Oregon in October of 2013. The main character Max after having visions of what she later realizes is the future where a tornado swell destroying the town gains the power to rewind time. The first thing she does is save her friend Chloe from being killed. She also realizes she can go far into the past if she uses a photo. She does this many times as she completely alters time trying to fix things for her friend Chloe whose father died.
This power however if she over uses it causes her to get a nosebleed and sometimes faint which means she can only go so far back in time.This becomes a problem when Max stops time to try and stop her friend Kate from committing suicide. You have to make the right choices to talk her down this is one of the choices in the game that you can not rewind to do it right. Max tries to help Kate find out what happened to her after she was drugged and a video of her went viral.
Max also tries to find out what happened to Chloe’s friend Rachel Amber which she finds out is related to what happened to Kate. Throughout the game you have to make a lot of choices but the major one is at the end were you have to decide if you save Chloe or the town which if you choose to save the town you have to go back in time one final time to the beginning of the game and let Chloe be killed.
Bendy and the Ink Machine
Bendy and the Ink Machine is a survival horror game that is divide up into five chapters. In the game you play as Henry a retired animator who returned to his old studio after receiving a letter from his old friend Joey Drew. The game itself is published under the name of the fictional animation studio Joey Drew Studios Inc. Throughout the game you have to solve puzzles, fight different ink monsters and explore the different levels of the studio.
There are various types of ink monsters each with different strength levels but the main monster to look out for is of course Bendy who with instantly kill you if you get caught. However at one point in Chapter 4 Bendy saves you from another monster the Projectionist. In the game there you can find voice recorders that tell the stories of the employees of the studio some of which you need to find in secret areas of the game.
In the game you have to do a lot of exploring and item gathering. One big example is in chapter three where you meet two other main characters from the Bendy cartoon Alice Angel and Boris. She offers to free Henry if he helps her do a few tasks and gives him various tools to help him. However Alice betrays Henry stealing Boris and dropping the elevator Henry is in trapping him deeper in studio.
The game has a lot if lore especially in figuring out who the Bendy and Alice Angel are. Most people believe Alice is a ink machine transformed Susie who once voiced the character Alice Angel in the cartoon. She was replaced by another voice actor and hold a lot of anger and hatred towards Joey and the studio which is why the ink machine made her into a deformed and crazy version of Alice Angel.
Alice is only one of many people who have been transformed by the ink machine all the ink monsters throughout the game were once employees of the studio. However not all of them try to attack you later in the game there are a bunch of ink monsters called lost ones who instead are waiting to be saved as shown by the writings on the walls.
Doki Doki Literature Club!
Doki Doki Literature Club! is a visual novel developed by Team Salvato in September of last year. It is a psychological horror game that is disguised as a dating simulator and it does a lot of fourth wall breaking. There are not a lot of opportunities in the game because it is a visual novel. However there is a mini game after each day that allows you to choose words to make a poem for three of the four girl based on their tastes.
The four main character is the game are Sayori, Natsuki, Yuri , and Monika. Sayori is your childhood friend who makes you join the literature club. Monika is the club president who is the only one you can’t go for as a love interest which serves a big plot point. Throughout the game you share poems with the other club members which allows you to get closer to them but the poems from the girls hint and foreshadow the problems they have.
Sayori suffers from depression, Natsuki is being abused by her father, and Yuri is obsessive and cuts herself. However these are problems that are caused or amplified by Monika who is self aware and can manipulate the game, even being able to delete the other girls from the game so you only pay attention to her.
Due to Monika tampering the game it starts to glitch throughout the story like deleting all past saves, showing messed up text and the characters’ sprites glitching out. The game gets more and more disturbing as the other girls are influenced by Monika and end up dead by killing themselves or by her killing them and deleting them from the game.
The game has several different endings but the “default” ending is when Monika has deleted all the other girls and you end up sitting across from her in a room she made. The game only ends when you delete her character from the game files which causes her to restore the other girls and remove herself out of her love for the player. However when you start the game Sayori is club president and intends to do what Monika did so Monika comes back one more time to completely delete the game.
Indie Horror Game: Fran Bow
Fran Bow is a point and click horror game that uses a psychological type of horror. Fran Bow was made by Natalia and Isak Martinsson and includes autobiographical elements from Natalia’s life. Throughout the game you have to solve puzzles to progress you have to talk to other characters to find out about the world and what you need to do. Also you to find and sometimes combine objects to figure out how to solve them.
In the game you play as a ten year old girl named Fran Bow who developed a mental disorder after having witnessed her parents murder. Fran ends up being admitted to Oswald Asylum and is separated from her only friend her cat Mr. Midnight. While in the asylum she is cared from by Dr. Marcel Deern who gives her medication that causes Fran to have vivid hallucinations of a bloody, horrific, and grisly looking parallel world filled with strange creatures and shadowy figures called Kamalas.
Fran decides to escape the asylum to find Mr. Midnight and get back home. The pills Fran is given allows her to go from one world to another when ever she takes them which allows you to find things you can only get in the bloody world that help you escape. Throughout her journey Fran tries to find out who is responsible for her parents’ deaths and discovers a place called Isthersta where people are vegetables and roots.
In the game Fran herself becomes a tree when she enters this place. After she leaves Ithersta she meets a skeleton type creature named Itward who helps her get back to Mr. Midnight. Throughout the game it becomes harder for Fran to tell the difference between what she sees as reality whether she is on or off the pills. The game makes it seem as though her views on reality are breaking as you progress in the game. In the end of the game she finally faces the reality of her parents’ deaths and finds out who is responsible for them.
Five Night’s at Freddy’s: Sister Location
Although I have already done a post on the Five Night’s at Freddy’s games I decided to do another this time on Five Night’s at Freddy’s: Sister Location also known as FNAF 5. I decided to do this one opposed to the other games in the series because it both introduces characters we haven’t seen before, like Circus Baby, and uses a different type of game play. Instead of only being in one place trying to prevent the animatronics from attacking, you have to move from room to room in order to complete the tasks you’re given each of the five nights.
The game not only differentiates itself by adding new animatronics it also excludes one of the main ones from the other FNAF games Chica. Though in the hidden clues that Scott hid outside of the game one of them hints at Chica having a place to herself away from the others. The new animatronics are Circus Baby, Ballora, Ennard, Ballora’s minireenas, and Circus Baby’s bidybabs.
Their designs were more human like than Freddy’s usual characters except for Ennard who looks more like a tangled mess of wires and cords. One final way Sister Location is different is this time Scott uses voice actors to voice the characters including Freddy and Bonnie who have never had voices before.
Like all of the other Five Night’s at Freddy’s games it has a lot of hidden lore pieces in the form of a secret ending, 8-bit mini game, and cut scenes. Which once again caused many theorists to try and figure out things like where does it fit in to the timeline of the games, who were the new characters possessed by, and who you played as. These questions have more or less been answered except for the timeline which at a certain point got hard to put together perfectly.
Who you play is Micheal Afton who is the son of William Afton the creator of the animatronics in the game. Baby is said to be possessed by Afton’s daughter who got to close to Baby and was killed by her as shown in Baby’s mini game. Ballora is said to be possessed by Afton’s wife as she seems to be more mature than all the other characters. Even though the game deviates from the other first four games to get the secret ending you have to beat they game playing in the original Five Night’s at Freddy’s style using camera to stop Ennard from trying to kill you.
New Spider-Man Game
This new Spider-Man game was just released last month on the PlayStation 4 and is an action adventure game. The game covers a story that isn’t in any previously made games, comics, or movies you also play parts of the game as Peter Parker not just Spider-Man. In this game you can choose to follow the story line or free roam and look for things like new suits to wear in the game.
The suits are made up of some new ones as well as some that have been seen before and have different special powers to them. Spider-Man also has new finishing moves in combat as well as his well known web shooters and his spider sense. While you are moving through the city you also get to travel by web swinging from one building to another, wall crawling, and using parkour.
Apart from Spider-Man there are a lot of other well known characters from the Spider-Man comics. These characters include Mary Jane Watson, Aunt May, Norman and Harry Osborn, and Otto Octavius who will eventually become the villain known as Doctor Octopus. You also get to play as both Mary Jane and Miles Morales in some parts of the game. Apart from Doctor Octopus there are also several of Spider-Man’s most iconic enemies you face throughout the game like Electro, Rhino, Scorpion, and Vulture.
Horror Game: Little Nightmares
Little Nightmares is an horror adventure platforming game that was released in April of last year. In the game you play as a little girl, whose name is Six, as she tries to get out of the place called the Maw. Throughout the game you have to try to escape from these strange looking characters as the try to stop you from escaping.
The first of these characters you encounter is the Janitor. The Janitor has very long arms and short legs his long arms mean that even if your far away or up high he can still catch you. He is also blind so you have to be careful not to make any noise or he will catch you. But this can also be used to your advantage as you can use sound to distract him and sneak away. The next enemies you face are the Twin Chefs this makes it more difficult because you have to avoid two enemies at once. The Chefs attack you once you enter their line of sight but if you manage to run away far enough they will leave you only and go back to whatever they were doing.
After you manage to escape the Twin Chefs you see characters known as Guests, who are obese and are grotesque looking, entering the boat you are on. After that you have to run through several dining rooms filled with these Guests who are eating. As you are running through you have to avoid them trying to catch you so they can eat you.
After managing to get through all the Guests you finally get to fight the final boss. She is known as the Lady or the Geisha who is the leader of the Maw. Unlike the other characters in the game she looks beautiful and more like a normal person. She isn’t however as she has some kind of dark magical powers. After beating her Six continues to kill her and absorbs the Lady’s power and uses it to finally escape the Maw.
What path will you take? Detroit Become Human
Detroit Become Human is an adventure game where your choices influence how to story of the characters go. In the game you play as three different androids each have their own story and sometimes they overlap. In the game even if you get one of the three main characters killed the story just continues without them. This makes it so that there are many different endings you can get based on how you decide to play and make the story go.
The first of the three main characters in the game is Connor who is a police investigator type android whose job is to help hunt down other androids that have gone rogue and deviated from what their programming tells them, these androids are called Deviants. The second is a housekeeper android named Kara who looks after a little girl named Alice and her father. She becomes a Deviant after protecting Alice from her father and then goes on the run with her while trying to take care of her the whole time. The final of the main three characters is Markus a caretaker android for an old painter. After becoming a Deviant while confronting a robber Markus goes on to try and set all of the other androids free by turning them into Deviants as well.
Detroit Become Human is an interesting choose your own story type adventure game with many different outcomes and an interesting story lines. It puts an emphasis on making what you think are the right choices for the character in the game to make. You can also make your choices based on what you would do in their situation. The game doesn’t just end because one of the main characters dies it makes the choices you make even more important if you want to keep them all alive til the end. Since there are different ending it makes it interesting to go back and see how different choices you make will effect the ending.
